Portrait drawing is an art form that requires precision, attention to detail, and a keen eye for capturing the subject's features. Graphite portrait drawing, in particular, is a technique that emphasizes light and dark tones, shading, and smooth transitions to create an accurate and lifelike representation of the subject.

In this blog post, I will explain the process of drawing a graphite portrait of Michael B. Jordan, an accomplished actor and producer known for his charismatic performances and appearance. We will be using a combination of the Loomis and Reilly methods, which provide a structured approach to drawing facial features and proportions.

Before we dive into my step-by-step process, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  1. Drawing materials: For a graphite portrait, you need to use pencils of course, paper, and erasers. You can draw with one pencil. I have drawn many portraits with just a standard No.2 pencil that you may use in school. Although, I do find it to be much easier to use multiple pencils with varying hardness and softness. The pencils I like to use range from H to 6B. The H pencil has a hard lead, where the 6B pencil has a soft lead making it much easier to get a dark value for the blacks. Also, it helps, but necessary, to have quality pencils that are easy to sharpen. A good paper should have a smooth texture that can hold multiple layers of graphite without smudging but a lot of times I truly enjoy drawing on just plain printer paper. Use what you have and can afford. Don't let your supplies be an excuse for not drawing.

  2. Start with light sketches: Always start with light sketches to create a rough framework of the subject's features and proportions. This is where I use the harder pencils such as and H or and HB. Refine your drawing gradually by adding more values and darker shading using the darker pencils such as the 2b, 4B & 6B pencils. Once you establish you values, you can refine the portrait by smoothing the transitions between values and adding the details to finish off the likeness of the portrait.

  3. Use high-quality references: It is essential to have a reference photo or a live subject to draw from. This will help you capture the subject's likeness and unique features accurately. It is almost impossible to get an accurate likeness without a quality likeness.

Now that you have these tips in mind, let's get started with the step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Sketch the head shape: Using the Loomis method, sketch a circle to represent the head's basic shape. Place the center line to help with correct placement of the facial features. Divide the circle horizontally into thirds to create the hairline, the brow, and the bottom of the nose. Draw a vertical line that bisects the circle and extends below it to create the chin's base. Sketch a horizontal line at the height of the eyes.

Step 2: Add the features: Using the Reilly method, start adding the features to your sketch. Sketch the eyes, nose, and mouth by following the basic proportions laid out by the Loomis method. Pay close attention to the subject's unique features, such as Michael B. Jordan's sharp jawline, defined cheekbones, and expressive eyes.

For example, here is a video of how I do this process.

Step 3: Add Values: Once you have a rough framework of the subject's features, start adding values by adding light values. Use a kneaded eraser to remove any excess graphite and create highlights.

Step 4: Add depth and contrast: To create depth and contrast, start adding darker shading to the parts of the drawing that receive less light. Use varying pressure and pencil grades to create smooth transitions between shades.

For example, here is a video showing how I added values to my portrait of Michael B Jordan.

Step 5: Final touches: Once you are happy with the values and shading, make any final adjustments and touches. Add extra shading to the eyes, lips, and hair to create a realistic texture. Add any other details that are needed to achieve a good likeness. Sign and date your drawing!
